Choosing a new boiler can sound super boring, right? But it’s actually pretty important for warm showers and cosy rooms! Don’t worry, we’ll explain the main types of boilers so you can see which one might be best for your house in Stoke-on-Trent.
1. Combi Boilers: Quick Hot Water, No Tanks!
Imagine hot water instantly, like magic, whenever you turn on the tap! That’s what a combi boiler does. It’s like a super-smart box that heats water as you need it, so you don’t need big tanks in your loft or airing cupboard.
- Best for: Smaller homes, or if you don’t have much space. Perfect for one bathroom.
- Good stuff: Saves space, gives instant hot water.
- Not so good: If everyone in the house tries to shower at the same time, the hot water might get a bit weaker.

2. System Boilers: Hot Water for More Showers!
A system boiler is like the combi‘s big brother. It still gets water straight from the pipes, but it stores a bunch of hot water in a big tank (called a hot water cylinder) that’s usually in a cupboard. This means lots of hot water for more than one person at a time!
- Best for: Medium to bigger homes, especially if you have two or more bathrooms.
- Good stuff: Lots of hot water for everyone, doesn’t need a cold water tank in the loft.
- Not so good: You still need space for that hot water tank. If you use up all the stored hot water, you have to wait for it to heat up again.

3. Conventional Boilers: The Old School Way
This is the traditional boiler, what most older homes have. A conventional boiler needs two tanks: a hot water tank in a cupboard and a cold water tank up in the loft. It heats the water, then sends it to the hot tank.
- Best for: Big houses with lots of bathrooms, or if you’re replacing a really old boiler and don’t want to change too much.
- Good stuff: Can handle tons of hot water use, even if your water pressure isn’t super strong.
- Not so good: Needs two big tanks, so you need space for them. Can be a bit slower to heat water.

Which Boiler is Right for Your Home?
It really just depends on your house and your family!
- How many bathrooms do you have?
- Do lots of people want hot water at the same time?
